Beautiful furniture not without drawbacksApr 10, 2011

We bought this to make our company's office look a little more professional by not having copier paper, toner cartridges, and other miscellaneous junk laying all about and visible under tables and next to the copier, and such. For that purpose, this credenza is ideal. It is very large, very roomy and has plenty of space in the cabinets with a typical amount of space in the drawers. The inner shelves are adjustable (or removable), so you can even hide away whole boxes of copier paper, a small paper shredder, telephone books, and other items that aren't always that attractive when just laying about. There are unobtrusive semi-circular and circular holes for electrical cords on the back and top, allowing you to conveniently hide small pieces of ugly OA equipment (laminators, mail shredders, weather radios, etc.). The finish is a little over glossy for my taste, with the laminate feeling a lot like a hard resin as opposed to a natural wood, but it seems quite durable and scratch resistant because of it. It comes with drawers and doors sold separately from the cabinet (this review being for both - in other words - the completed unit), which come with two sets of handles, brushed silver and matte black, making it even easier to match your home or office décor. Unfortunately, many of the "features" end up being what many others (including me) might consider as drawbacks.[...]Next, this unit is heavy, as in "elephant in a dump truck with bags of concrete" heavy. If you're looking for a sturdy, stable unit and don't plan to move it about much, this certainly fits the bill. The final drawback is the biggest: due to its immense size and weight, you will definitely need at least two people, and sometimes three, to assemble and move the unit. The panels that make up the unit are big, slippery and heavy. Confounding matters is that the assembly instructions are not very clear and the unit does not go together very cleanly. That's where you need the third person to sight and adjust when doing the middle and top panels. Even at that, we had to force the top to accept the inner supports and then had to spend another half hour adjusting the fit of the doors because of the uneven construction. Total assembly time with two people with cordless tools: just under two hours, with about fifteen minutes of assistance from a third person. As long as you and a friend don't mind a workout to put it together and you are okay with the somewhat steep price, the finished product is great. The unit is functional, looks nice, uses (a lot of)space efficiently, and has features that provide flexibility for multiple purposes. It's not a perfect piece of furniture, but it is four stars "very good".
