Pretty good multipurpose deviceApr 25, 2007
By GEEBEE I really like that it has a built in fax modem. That means it can function as a standalone fax machine/copier. you don't have to connect it to a PC to use it as a Fax machine.
Text quality is good. Photo quality is OK. Good enough for casual photo printing, but pros and advanced amateurs will want a dedicated photo printer.
Very easy to set up. Instructions are well written and easy to follow.
It comes with PaperPort SE with OCR and the device control program (Brother control Center 3)is very well designed and allows you to do all the things the device can do pretty easily.
I think the paper supply cartridge is poorly designed. It is too easy to accidentally change the size of paper that you are using and this can cause paper jams. I think this problem can be minimized with practice, but if you have a spouse who is a technophobe, it could be a point of frustration.
I just got it, so I can't confirm this, but the manual claims the black ink cartridge can produce up to 900 pages of text, assuming an average of 5% coverage. If this is anywhere close to true, this means it is one of the most economical ink jet printers on the market.
I paid $99 for this device, and for the money it is a remarkable value.
Update 8/18/2007 - I have resolved the paper cartridge issue. Apparently, I hadn't set up the cartridge properly, and that was the cause of the paperjams. However, while I can upgrade the unit for overall design, I must downgrade it for its owner's manual's poor description of the paper cartridge set-up. It's still a good product overall though. I still have no regrets buying it.

If you get frustrated easily, DO NOT BUY THISFeb 08, 2007

This printer prints just fine ... when you gan get the paper to load properly!! The paper tray is so poorly designed it's a complete nightmare! If you don't get frustrated by poor designs, then by all means give this one a go. But if you are at all like me, and expect your electronics to perform consistantly day after day... THEN STEER CLEAR OF THIS ONE!

Worst Printer EverDec 17, 2007
By Fizgig Oh brother! Where to begin? This printer jams more than the Grateful Dead in the mid-nineties. It feels like every other time I print I have to clear a jam and then it have to turn it off to get it to reset, why does it say paper jam when there is no paper jam? Trying to print on anything other than 20lb stock...forget it, it confuses the printer. I am also surprised this printer is not built by Hummer the way it sucks down ink. I have a small business and this is the worst investment I made. I've only had it for three months and I had to have someone come out to fix it. The repair person just laughed at me and told me to get another printer. The printer has also stopped being able to take the paper without prodding and cursing, so it's always telling me there is no paper. Arghhh! The only good thing I can say is that the scan function does work. I highly recommend spending extra money on a better machine it will be cheaper in the end with the cost of ink.

Rip Off!Apr 02, 2009
By Brett J. Whitin The cost of this all-in-one machine was pretty low, so I bought it. The box bragged about not wasting ink because each color has a separate cartridge, so I thought it was a good product. While I can't complain about the fax or scan components, the printer is primitive, and the ink is a killer! It can't print double-sided, unless you find creative and laborious ways to do this manually (no thanks), and it spits out multiple-paged documents in reverse order, so you have to reshuffle yourself. I rarely print things on this, but I probably spend $100 a year in ink. Furthermore, I print in black and white 95% of the time, but somehow the colors run out almost as fast as the black. When I compare the weight of a so-called empty cartridge with that of a new cartridge, there is barely a difference. You can still shake the cartridge and hear liquid in there, but the machine refuses to print! It is a complete scam, and I will never buy another Brother product because of this!

Excellent low cost scannerMar 21, 2007
By A. Bartlett I bought this specifically to use as a multi page sheet feeding scanner and it works great for that purpose. Costs a fraction of other dedicated sheet feeding scanners. I have run 10-15 pages at a time through the feeder without any problems. Highly recommended for this purpose.
